Berenberg Bank Masters 2013 back in Cologne: top golfers to attend Rhineland event

Hamburg. The Berenberg Bank Masters tournament is going into its fourth year and will be taking place at the Golf- und Land-Club Köln in Bergisch Gladbach from the 2nd to the 4th of August 2013. The event is thus returning to the venue that hosted it in 2011. Germany’s oldest private bank will be presenting the tournament as title sponsor for further year.

After the tournament's first time in 2010, when it was held at Fancourt, South Africa with Thai player Boonchu Ruangkit emerging as the winner, Berenberg decided together with Langer Sport Marketing to make Germany its home in the future. Since then it has developed into a flagship event of the European Senior Tour in continental Europe, which top stars among the over-fifties contest year after year.

“We are delighted that the Berenberg Bank Masters is so enthusiastically received by both the players and the audience. On the steeped-in-tradition course of the Golf- und Land-Club Köln we shall in 2013 again be presenting a starting field including numerous, congenial golf greats to golf fans in the Rhineland,” Dr Hans-Walter Peters, spokesman of Berenberg Bank’s managing partners, promises.

The participants will once again be welcoming the tournament's two ambassadors, Bernhard Langer and Gary Player from South Africa. Player has, since the tournament's premiere in his home country, attended all of the subsequent events in Germany as a special guest. Langer, recently the winner for the fourth time in five years of the Order of Merit of the Overseas Senior Tour, is also expecting such other big names as Sam Torrance (Scottish), Barry Lane (English), Costantino Rocca (Italian) as well as the current titleholder of the Berenberg Bank Masters, Tim Thelen from the USA.

Nor will Colin Montgomerie miss the opportunity to participate in the August tournament, which will be one of his first appearances among the seniors. The Scot will have celebrated his 50th birthday, which is the entry qualification for the European Senior Tour events, a few weeks beforehand. Montgomerie dominated European golf in the nineties and, among other achievements, topped the rankings seven times in succession.

Particularly Ian Woosnam will have the best of recollections of the G&LC Köln, given that this was the venue when he won the Berenberg Bank Masters in 2011. The Welshman was – just like all of his colleagues – full of praise about the perfectly groomed course and the good general conditions. The rich-in-tradition venue will in the upcoming season boast a new clubhouse, which should further enhance the ‘feelgood factor’.
