Berenberg gains Gary Player as a brand representative
Hamburg. Germany’s oldest private bank has steadily expanded its
involvement in golf over the last several years. Golf icon Gary Player will now be the new brand representative of Berenberg.
The cooperation between Gary Player and Berenberg, which has grown in the last several years, will now lead to a three-year partnership in which the South African golf icon will act as worldwide brand representative for the private bank based in Hamburg. During the past four years, Player already acted as a representative of the Berenberg Masters, a tournament that is part of the European Senior Tour. In addition, Berenberg was the main sponsor in recent years of the Gary Player Invitational in England, one of the top charity golf tournaments worldwide. The tournament series has helped the Gary Player Foundation to collect approximately USD 50 million for children in need over the last 30 years.
“We are proud to have gained Gary Player as a representative for our bank be-cause he stands for sportsmanship, fairness and community involvement like nobody else. Gary is one of the most widely recognised sports idols around the world. He makes use of his fame and talent to increase opportunities for chil-dren in need wherever he can,” said Dr. Hans-Walter Peters, spokesman for the personally liable partners of Berenberg.
Gary Player has been a professional golfer for 60 years. He has won 165 profes-sional tournaments, including nine Major Championships as part of the regular PGA Tour and nine Majors on the Senior or Champions Tours. He is one of only five golfers to have achieved the Grand Slam. As number one in the world, he has designed 325 golf courses and has covered 25 million kilometres over the course of this career – more than any other athlete.
“I am happy to have the opportunity to act as the worldwide representative for a bank as prestigious as Berenberg. Berenberg was a fantastic partner for the non-profit work of my foundation and I have very much come to appreciate the cooperation with and the people at Berenberg,” Gary Player explained today, his 78th birthday. He added: “I feel like I‘m in my early 50s!” Player was one of the first golfers to incorporate a fitness regime into his training programme. He still does sit-ups every day, lifts weights and gladly spends an hour in the practice bunker after a round of golf...
“With our sports sponsoring agreement, we also want to increase awareness of the Berenberg brand internationally,” explained Karsten Wehmeier, Head of Corporate Communications at Berenberg. The bank has 17 locations in Europe, the USA and Asia.
In addition to Gary Player, Berenberg has had another brand representative in the world of professional golf since the beginning of 2013 – Branden Grace. The South African, born in 1988, represented the Berenberg brand on the Eu-ropean Tour and PGA Tour. In 2012, he had his breakthrough and won three tour tournaments in one season – a feat that had previously only been accom-plished at such a young age by Seve Ballesteros and Sandy Lyle. Grace is also the only player thus far in the history of the European Tour to win three tournaments in his first year.
In recent years, Berenberg has also been involved in the European Senior Tour with the Berenberg Masters and as an official bank partner of Ricoh Wom-en’s British Open.
