Index 13 – Berenberg Prize for Young Art goes to Katja Aufleger
Hamburg. The Berenberg Prize for Young Art was awarded to the artist Katja Aufleger on 6 November 2013. More than 1,200 visitors came to the Kunsthaus Hamburg for the opening of the exhibition with 20 young artists who had been nominated for the award.
The Oldenburg-born artist, who completed her master’s degree at the University of Fine Arts of Hamburg (HFBK) in sculpting under Andreas Slominski, among others, convinced the expert jury both with the complexity of her artistic work and especially with the conceptual quality of her style of working and the thoroughness of the aesthetic implementation. Ms Aufleger consciously offsets the serious nature of her images, objects and installations with finely honed humour.
The jury members this year were Prof. Martin Köttering (University of Fine Arts of Hamburg), Dr Brigitte Kölle (Hamburger Kunsthalle), Dr Dirk Luckow (Deichtorhallen Hamburg), Dr Britta Schmitz (National Gallery in Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin), Franziska Solte and Isabelle Busch (Kunstverein Harburger Bahnhof).
The award carrying a cash prize of EUR 5,000 represents yet another contribu-tion to promoting culture in Hamburg in addition to many other activities of the private bank Berenberg. As a curated sales exhibition, Index has been showing modern art at the Kunsthaus Hamburg on a regular basis at the end of the year since 2001. All 20 nominated artists will be on display in the Kunsthaus until 10 November. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of HFBK this year, only artists that studied at the university or completed their training there over the past few years are involved. A catalogue has been published to accompany the exhibition.
