Kids Company was set up in recognition of the needs of underprivileged children. The charity was established in 1996 with the aim of delivering emotional and practical support within structures which are directly accessible to children who they describe as "significantly lacking in nurture".

The organisation is currently present in 30 schools in London. 95% of the children refer themselves to the services of Kids Company, hearing about it through wordof- mouth on the streets and at school. In 2006, some 11,000 ‘clients’ were supported by their programme, both within schools and at their dedicated centre in South London.
