Matthias Born is the head of Berenberg's equity fund management since 2017 and is also Head of Investments at Germany's oldest private bank since 2019. He is responsible for the investment platform in the Wealth & Asset Management division and in his Equities role he built up a team of specialists for European and Global Equities, with strong expertise in the Small Caps segment. The growth-oriented equity funds Berenberg European Focus Fund and Berenberg Eurozone Focus Fund are under his leadership and have clearly outperformed the benchmark since their launch. He started his career in 2001 at Allianz Global Investors (AGI), where he managed portfolios for European small caps, European growth stocks and German equities from 2002 to 2017. He has grown two very successful equity franchises over the 16 years at AGI. Matthias Born has an excellent track record over almost two decades in these segments and has received several awards for his outstanding and consistent performance. He studied at the University of Wuerzburg and holds a degree in Business Administration.
Martin Hermann has been Portfolio Manager at Berenberg since October 2017 and is responsible for the Berenberg Global Focus Fund as well as the VV AktienStrategie Global. He began his career in 2010 as an Investment Trainee of the Graduate Program at Allianz Global Investors, where he served as a Portfolio Manager and Vice President within the award-winning "Europe Equity Growth Team". His responsibilities included deputy fund management of the International Equity Growth Fund. Martin Hermann holds a Master in Investment Analysis and Corporate Finance from the University of Vienna and is CFA Charterholder.
Bernd Deeken joined Berenberg in April 2011. He is a portfolio manager in the equity fund management team and manages special mandates with a focus on sustainability for institutions, foundations, church institutions and private clients. He is responsible for the approach and selection of Berenberg’s sustainability universe. Previously, he worked in asset management in the area of multi-asset mandates. After his dual studies at the Berufsakademie für Bankwirtschaft in Hannover (including a bank schooling), he completed his Masters in Banking and Finance in Zurich and Aberdeen. He is a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA) and is also a CFA Charterholder.
Kay Eichhorn-Schott has been a portfolio manager at Berenberg since October 2017. Kay started his professional career in October 2015 when he joined Berenberg’s international graduate programme and worked in the Wealth and Asset Management division in London. Kay holds a BSc in Business Administration and a MSc in Finance and studied at EBS Business School, Germany, University of Bath, UK, and Texas A&M University, USA. In addition, he is a CFA charterholder.
Ralf Walter joined Berenberg as a Portfolio Manager in July 2021 and is responsible for the Berenberg Absolute Return European Equities fund. He started his career in equity portfolio management in 1998 at ADIG Investment GmbH in the German Small- and Mid Cap Team and at Commerz Asset Managers in the area of German and European Small and Mid Caps. Before joining Berenberg, he managed alternative equity strategies at Allianz Global Investors for 12 years. He has gained over 20 years of experience in equity fund management based on fundamental stock analysis with focus on German and Eurozone Small- and Mid Cap equities. He successfully managed long-only portfolios as well as market neutral long-short strategies (Allianz Discovery Germany Strategy). Ralf studied at University of Hohenheim and holds a degree in Finance. In addition, he is a CFA charterholder.
Oliver Fritz has been Portfolio Manager at Berenberg since July 2017. He started his career as a Sell-Side Sales at Main First. Before joining Berenberg, he worked as a Sell-Side Sales at Goldman Sachs. He holds a Bachelor in Economics from Maastricht University and a Master in Finance and Management from St Andrews University.
Justus Schirmacher has been portfolio manager at Berenberg since January 2019. He began his career in 2014 with Goldman Sachs as an equity analyst in the European Autos Team. Before joining Berenberg, Justus Schirmacher worked in the GS SUSTAIN team. The focus here was identifying cross-sector companies with successful and sustainable business models that have strong competitive advantages and benefit from structural growth. Justus Schirmacher studied history at the University of Cambridge.
Equities Small and Micro Cap
Peter Kraus, CFA, has been Head of Small Cap Equities at Berenberg since October 2017. He began his career in 2000 as an equity analyst for a corporate finance consultancy in Munich before moving to Deka-Investment in Frankfurt in 2003. There he worked as an analyst for European Small Cap stocks. In 2006 he joined Allianz Global Investors as fund manager for European Micro and Small/Mid Caps where he was instrumental in the success of the Small Caps team in subsequent years. Peter Kraus was responsible for the management of various European smaller companies funds as well as for the acquisition and management of major international institutional mandates. He is known for his stock picking skills which he has successfully proven for many years, especially in a European Micro Cap product. The product was already closed years ago due to its outstanding performance.
Michael Schopf has been Portfolio Manager at Berenberg since January 2018. He began his career at Allianz Global Investors in 2007, and previously worked in the Private Banking sector of Deutsche Bank. In the European Mid/Small Cap team, he was responsible for several European equity funds. In addition to his portfolio management responsibilities, he also oversaw the stock selection of some Central European countries. Michael Schopf received the Bachelor of Arts with distinction and the Master in Finance from the Frankfurt School of Finance & Management. He is CFA Charterholder since 2011.
Katharina Raatz has been a portfolio manager at Berenberg since October 2017. She began her investment career as portfolio manager in DWS’ European Small Cap Team in 2013, where she was responsible for managing various European Small and Mid Cap retail funds and institutional mandates as well as for the single stock selection of French/ Italian small caps for DWS’ global equities platform. Moreover, she was responsible for managing professional international clients and deputy portfolio manager of DWS’ biggest Mid Cap retail fund. Katharina Raatz holds a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Mannheim and has been a CFA Charterholder since 2017.
Johann Abrahams has been a small/micro cap portfolio manager at Berenberg since January 2020. Prior to this, he completed the Berenberg International Graduate Program with assignments in sell-side equity research, equity sales, ECM, syndicate, as well as quantitative and discretionary asset management. Johann Abrahams is a CFA Level III candidate and holds a BSc in Economics from the University of Mannheim and a MSc in Finance and Economics from the London School of Economics.
Fabian Weinstock has been a small/micro cap portfolio manager at Berenberg since August 2021. He started his professional career in the Berenberg International Graduate Program with assignments in Equity Sales, Equity Research and Asset Management. Subsequently, he worked for close to two years as an Equity Research Analyst at the Berenberg Investment Bank in London. Fabian Weinstock holds a CISI Level 3 Certificate in Securities, a BSc in Business and Finance from the University of Münster, and an MSc in Investment and Finance from the University of London.
Andreas Strobl has been Portfolio Manager at Berenberg since November 2016. He began his professional career in 2002 as a Sell-Side Analyst at BayernLB in Munich. In 2006 he switched to Allianz Se (Aequitas GmbH) as Senior Investment Manager. There, he managed European equity investments within the framework of a fundamental investment approach, particularly in the areas of finance, real estate and media. Andreas Strobl joined Allianz Global Investors in Frankfurt in 2015 as a Senior Portfolio Manager, where he was responsible for the management and development of various European small/mid cap equity portfolios. He studied business administration at the LMU in Munich. In 2005, he completed the CIIA (Certified International Investment Analyst) and CEFA (Certified European Financial Analyst) training as the best in his class.
Sebastian Leigh has been Portfolio Manager at Berenberg since October 2017. Previously, he spent 3 years as an Associate in the Assurance division of EY, with a primary focus on automotive and healthcare companies. He studied Accounting and Finance at the University of Kent. He has also passed the CFA Level I exam.
Sabrina Bendel has been Product Specialist for the discretionary Equity portfolio management team since April 2017. Before joining Berenberg, she was working within the Asset Management division of Deutsche Bank Group. She has been responsible as Product Specialist for European and German Equity Funds. Sabrina studied Economics and Business Administration at University of Hohenheim, Germany.
Selin Ceylan has been Product Specialist for the discretionary equities team since June 2020. Before joining Berenberg, she worked in the Investment Management division of Morgan Stanley from 2018 to 2019. Selin Ceylan is a CFA Level I candidate and holds a Bachelor of Science in International Management and a Master of Finance from Frankfurt School of Finance & Management in Germany.
