13.07.2018 — Euromoney Awards for Excellence 2018: Berenberg is Germany's best investment bank
London. Berenberg is further expanding its position in investment banking and was named “Best Investment Bank in Germany” in the “Euromoney Awards for Excellence” by the renowned business magazine.
David Mortlock, Head of Investment and Corporate Banking at Berenberg, received the award: “We are delighted to have received this award as it recognizes our efforts to provide first-class investment banking services to companies and international investors. We are proud of business we have built in recent years and still excited about future opportunities. MiFID II is leading our clients to really analyse who is adding value to their investment process, given our breadth and quality, we welcome this increased scrutiny.”
“Focused on equities, Berenberg considers its advantages lie in its ability to gain business on the basis of its quality – better ideas and insights on the research side, better advice to companies looking to list or raise capital in the equity markets. Overall, the idea is for a return to the model of the 1990s independent merchant banks, before they were swallowed up by the bulge-bracket firms“, says the jury.
Berenberg has grown dynamically in recent years. In 2017, the number of equity analysts increased to 122, the number of covered stocks rose to 770 and Berenberg continues to expand its presence in the USA. In addition to European stocks the bank intends to triple the 97 US stocks currently covered over the next two years.
Berenberg is the leader in German-speaking countries in IPOs, capital increases and placements. In recent years it has developed into an ECM company active throughout Europe. Last year, the bank completed a record number of 51 transactions with an issue volume of around EUR 8.6 billion, including the IPOs of Varta, Delivery Hero, City Pub Group, Alpha Financial and Hello Fresh. This success continued in the first six months of 2018 with 34 transactions.
