For reasons of safeguarding the system's reliability SWIFT temporarily saves the transaction data in its data processing centres in the Netherlands and in the US.

The motive for this information is a decision by data protection supervisory authorities taken in November 2006 with which these react to access by US authorities to transfer data in the data processing centre of SWIFT in the US for the purpose of combatting international terrorism.
