Promoting culture

The commitment of Hamburg's families and corporations to patronage of science and the arts has made the Hanseatic city Germany's capital for charitable foundations. Over the years, Berenberg Bank has supported many initiatives in this field.

To mark the occasion of its 400th anniversary, the Bank's owners established a charitable foundation under the name Berenberg Bank Stiftung von 1990.

Nowadays, cultural diversity and a sense of vitality are important factors influencing companies and people in their choice of location. In its efforts to make Hamburg an even more attractive location, the Berenberg Foundation concentrates particularly on promoting the development of up-and-coming artists.

Berenberg Culture Prize

Every year, the Foundation awards the Berenberg Culture Prize of € 15 000 to support younger artists and promote the city.

The prize can be awarded to individual artists or groups from the whole spectrum of cultural activities, such as the fine arts, the performing arts, literature, music and film.

Berenberg Scholarships

The Foundation also supports individual artists and groups through the award of scholarships.

The scholarships, awarded by the Foundation itself, are intended to serve the artistic development of talented young people. In the field of promoting gifted schoolchildren, the Foundation cooperates with Jugend musiziert.

Support for the activities of the Foundation

Berenberg Bank Stiftung von 1990 is a charitable institution that can be supported in its activities by endowment contributions.

Applications

Cultural support is provided exclusively for artists who have a particular connection with Hamburg (e.g. who were born in Hamburg or who live, study or work in the city). Applications may be made up to the end of October and require no particular form. The committee and board of the Foundation will make the decision on applications. In principle, no support is provided by way of contribution to travel or printing expenses or to the promotion of projects.
