There is not enough philanthropic capital around in the form of donations and foundation funds or development aid from governments to resolve the most pressing problems of our day on a global scale. Profit-seeking capital is also required to achieve this. What is known as impact investing is a trend in the investment strategies of foundations and philanthropists derived from this assertion. This represents a type of bridge between donations and endowments on the one hand and profit-maximising investments on the other. The focus here is not merely on the financial interests of the impact investor, but the contribution to resolving social or ecological problems is generally at least just as important.
